BHOPAL: A fast rising crime graph has become a matter of deep concern in Madhya Pradesh and the situation has reached such a pass that even Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan was compelled to tell the police while reviewing the law and order situation this past weekend that there should be an end to kidnappings and efforts should be made to instil a feeling of security among the citizens. Mr. Chauhan was firm in asserting that anti-social elements should not be spared. He approved in principle the proposal to appoint senior police officers in big towns and said that the powers to transfer police personnel (constables, head constables and assistant inspectors) at district and zone levels could be decentralised. The Chief Minister said the recent kidnapping of a one-year-old child in Narsingarh district was a serious matter but at the same time expressed satisfaction that the boy had been rescued and handed over to the parents. He went on to praise the alertness shown by the Narsingarh district police in this case. He said the police should make its presence felt when it comes to generalised security and also instil fear among the criminals. He assured that additional resources would be sanctioned on a priority basis to help the police keep effective control over the law and order situation. State Director-General of Police Anand Rao Pawar spoke about efforts being made by the police to curb the activities of criminals and anti-social elements.
