BARSANA (UTTAR PRADESH): An annual eye camp organised by Bhaktivedanta Hospital here concluded over the weekend after screening over 2,800 patients and treating 716 of them. Mathura Refineries Director J. P. Guharay, who inaugurated the camp, said. “We need such camps in rural areas to eradicate blindness.” Started as a small-scale eye check-up camp, the set-up has now grown to become an annual feature attracting a large number of villagers from not only Barsana, a remote village in Mathura district, but also Bharatpur, Madhavpur and parts of Rajasthan. The camp has also attracted doctors from the United States and the United Kingdom. The trustee and chief coordinator of Barsana Eye Camp, Dr. Shanbagh, said: “Though these villages are equipped with a primary health centre or a community health centre, the medical facilities are not sufficient to cater to the increasing population. Every year the backlog is increasing because blindness due to reasons other than cataract can only be treated at a well-equipped hospital.”“Share Your Care” director K. Venkataramanan said: “Every month we have our camp at the clinic in Barsana and screen over 350 patients while operating on about 30 of then.”
