HAPPY OCCASION: Minister for Animal Husbandry P. Geetha Jeevan distributing a free bicycle to a student in Tuticorin on Tuesday.
Tuticorin: Minster for Animal Husbandry P Geetha Jeevan distributed free bicycles to 595 students of Caldwell, Desnavis and Aloysious Higher Secondary Schools under a scheme of the Department of Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Minority Welfare, here on Monday.
Of the total beneficiaries, 246 (150 girls, 96 boys) were from backward classes, 188 (148 girls, 40 boys) were from most backward classes and the remaining 161 students (114 girls, 47 boys) were from Adi Dravidar community.
Each of the cycle distributed to boys cost Rs.2,236, while the model distributed to girl cost Rs.2,142. Official sources said that the department had distributed a total of 6,224 free cycles to students of higher secondary schools studying at government, government-aided and partly-aided schools in the district, during the current financial year.
It was planned to distribute another 8,240 free cycles before March 31. Collector R. Palaniyandi, Municipal Chairperson Kasturi Thangam and District Backward Classes and Minority Welfare Officer E. Subramanian, participated.
