‘Introduce religious education in temples’
Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A meeting of Hindu sanyasis under the banner of the Rishi Maha Mandalam here on Tuesday urged the State government to take the initiative to introduce religious education in temples and ashrams.
A resolution presented at the meeting called on the government to utilise 50 per cent of the revenue generated by temples under the Devaswom Board for the economic and educational uplift of Hindu society.
It called for free higher education for children from economically backward Hindu families.
The mandalam finalised an action plan for a State-wide agitation to protest against the alleged governmental interference in the administration of temples. It accused the government of trying to take over Hindu religious institutions.
In the first phase of the agitation, the mandalam said, devotees will be mobilised and made aware of the dangers in government interference in the management of temples.
On March 18, the mandalam will take out a march to the Kowdiar Palace demanding that the Sri Padmanabha Swami temple be freed from vested interests.
