Siby Mathew examined in hooch case

KOLLAM: Additional Director-General of Police and Director-in-charge of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau Siby Mathew was on Tuesday examined and cross-examined before Kollam First Additional District and Sessions Judge T. Mohandas during the second phase of the trial in the sensational Kalluvathukkal hooch tragedy case.
Mr. Mathew was asked to appear before the court as a witness since he had headed the Special Investigation Team of the police which investigated the hooch tragedy. In the tragedy which occurred on October 20, 2000, 33 people lost -heir lives.
In the second phase, the accused who had allegedly been absconding when charges in the main trail were filed are being tired.
Mr. Mathew was examined by Additional Special Public Prosecutor G. Mohanraj. He was then cross-examined by P. Vijayaraghavan, counsel for accused number 18, Usha, who is the wife of Manichan, one of the prime accused in the first phase of the trial.
He was also cross-examined by Aja Kumar, counsel for accused number 19, Sugathan.
According to the charge-sheet, Sugathan was the licensee of the toddy shops in the Chirayinkeezhu range during the relevant period.
