Support the special needs of children
Sonali Nag, Visiting Fellow, Center for Reading and Language, University of York, U.K., writes:
“Is your child a little different?” (Public Eye, February 6, 2008) is a simple, well collated, no frills presentation of the learning disabilities.
The life stories of Anu and other children need to be told. This is one way for us to confront the subtle cruelty of school policies. Perhaps now we will begin to see “dyslexia friendly” schools where principals and teachers from the kindergarten to Std 12 commit to support the special needs of children. To support the child with dyslexia, schools must commit to individualised support being made available in school, during school hours, rather than outsource the responsibility to after-school centres.
