Flow of sand miners on Palar riverbed resumes
Staff Reporter
Waiting for a haul: Lorries parked on the Kancheepuram-Vandavasi Road to strike at the Palar riverbed.
KANCHEEPURAM: The Palar riverbed near Kancheepuram has, once again, become a hotbed for an intensive sand mining operation, with hundreds of lorries lining up on the Kancheepuram-Vandavasi Road on Tuesday.
Enquiries revealed that quarries, set up at Kaalur-Periyanatham on the Kancheepuram-Uthiramerur Road, had been closed recently while the sand mining operation at Pazhayaseevaram was restricted to a few lorries a day from last week. Further, it was claimed that the PWD had closed down the quarries set up on the banks of the rivers flowing in the neighbouring Tiruvallur district. Thus, the Palar riverbed, having Vippedu, Kolivakkam, Punjarasanthangal in Kancheepuram district and Ozhukkavalkam in Tiruvannamalai district as its boundaries, had become a much-sought-after place for sand mining.
Though only two units of sand were being loaded in vehicles, the spurt in movement of sand-laden lorries is all set to cause an extensive damage to already battered carriageways leading to the river from the town.
The Military Road, connecting the Kancheepuram-Vandavasi Road with the Kancheepuram-Chengalpattu Road, was re-laid at the cost of about Rs.1 crore three years ago.
However, with the continuous movement of sand lorries through this road, which also serves as a by-pass to Kancheepuram, it was almost reduced to a mud road at several stretches.
