ADDRESSING ISSUES: Students expressing their views at an awareness programme on child labour organised in Mudichur on Tuesday. — TAMBARAM: At an awareness meeting organised by the Kancheepuram district unit of INDUS (Indo-US) Child Labour Project at Mudichur near here on Tuesday, parents were told to ensure that children were sent to school. They were also cautioned that the long arm of the law would not spare anyone who prevented children from going to school. Awareness meetingStaff from the District Project Office of INDUS said that through the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, it was the objective of both the Central government and the School Education Department of the State Government to ensure that all children in the school-going age attended classes. The INDUS project’s aim was to rescue children from the clutches of labour and send them to Transitional Education Centres (TECs) and subsequently mainstream schools. Despite the efforts made by the Labour and School Education Departments, hundreds of children continued to be employed in shops, in the construction industry and farming sector, apart from some other hazardous units. Stating that the awareness levels were still low among a small section of the society, the staff reminded parents that it was the duty of all to ensure that no child was left out of school. If found guilty, those employing children and forcing them away from schools could be pulled and penalised under appropriate sections, the staff told the gathering. In St. Thomas Mount Block, more than 50 children were rescued from various workplaces in 2007 and accommodated in the five TECs being run at Tirusulam, Perungudi (Kallukuttai), Pallavaram, Adam Nagar in Nagalkeni and Kannagi Nagar in Thoraipakkam. TEC CentresThese TECs were providing education to a total of 150 children in the 9-14 age group. Along with SSA staff, INDUS would soon commence a survey of ‘out-of-school children’ in this Block. Lack of transport
During the interaction, parents and students complained that lack of adequate transport discouraged many children from going to school. Buses were overcrowded and students from rural pockets such as Mudichur and Mannivakkam had to struggle to reach Tambaram on their way to leading private and government institutions. Students of government schools were the worst affected, they said. Among those present at the meeting were K. Elumalai, Chairman of St. Thomas Mount Block, P.Damodaran, president of Mudichur village panchayat and N.Anbazhagan, Kancheepuram district Project Officer of INDUS Child Labour Project.
