Player honoured: Sania Mirza presenting a cheque for Rs. 25 lakh to Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna (extreme left). V. Chamundeswaranath, ACA secretary looks on.
HYDERABAD: The sporting initiative from tennis sensation Sania Mirza could not have come at a more appropriate time for Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna. For someone who is struggling even to find a single sponsor despite his big-serve being one of the widely appreciated in the circuit, Rohan’s delight was understandable when V. Chamundeswaranath, Andhra Cricket Association secretary, saw to that he pooled a sum of Rs. 25 lakh from sports-loving friends including Satish (ACA) and got it presented to the young tennis player at a simple function in the city on Tuesday. “It was Sania who suggested us to help Rohan who badly needs money to play in the circuit,” reminded Chamundeswaranath. Quite fittingly, he also ensured that Sania graced the event by presenting the cheque to her mixed doubles partner. “This is a pleasant surprise and one which really boost my confidence level. Now I can go out and more freely and work really hard for a huge load (financial) is off my mind,” Rohan remarked on the eve of his departure to take part in some of the big events including the Dubai International, the Masters Series in Indiana Wells and Miami. “I am really thankful to Sania and Chamundeswarnath for their wonderful support,” he acknowledged. Interestingly, it was Chamundeswaranath who saw to it that Sania Mirza herself got a car presented at the instance of Sachin Tendulkar when the she won the Wimbledon junior doubles title a few years ago and had come out with similar gestures to Pullela Gopi Chand when he won the All England championship (2001).
