Nod for Gangaikondan SEZ proposal expected within a month Nanguneri facility will be equipped to attract workforce from abroad TIRUNELVELI: A team of officials, led by the Development Commissioner, Special Economic Zones, B. Vijayan, inspected the proposed sites for the SEZs at Nanguneri and Gangaikondan near here on Tuesday. The purpose of the visit is to inspect the site and to verify whether all documents pertaining to the lands acquired for the project had been transferred as per the established procedures. Based on the report to be submitted by the Development Commissioner to the Union Government, the Centre will formally notify these areas as SEZs. Speaking to reporters at Gangaikondan after inspecting the site, Mr. Vijayan said that he would submit his report in a week and nod for the Gangaikondan SEZ proposal might be given in the next 30 days. Notification for the Nanguneri SEZ could be expected within two or three months. “Of the 53 proposed SEZs in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, permission has been granted for 27 units and inspection for the remaining proposals is going on and this exercise will be completed within six months,” said Mr. Vijayan, who was accompanied by the Assistant Development Commissioner, SEZ, Kalavathi, Commercial Development Manager, ELCOT, Nandakumar and others. After the State Government decided to establish a multi-product SEZ at Nanguneri, Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), which will execute the project in association with a private major, acquired 2,600 acres of land and applied to the Union Government for approving it as a SEZ. Though the Union Government had approved this proposed SEZ in May 2007 itself and the State Government had subsequently announced that work on establishing infrastructure at a cost of Rs.700 crore would begin shortly, nothing happened so far. As per the State Government’s plan, the Nanguneri SEZ should have light manufacturing, design and assembly facilities, modern infrastructure and amenities to attract workforce from across the globe. The industries to be established would include less water-intensive electronic and telecommunication components, electronic and consumer durables, light and precision engineering, information technology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals etc. In Gangaikondan, the Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) planned to establish an Information Technology Park on the sprawling SIPCOT Industrial Complex.
