Thinking minds: Students from various schools are busy in bringing their ideas on to the paper during competitions held at Anna Science Centre–Planetarium, Tiruchi.

TIRUCHI: Initiatives as trifling as closing the taps tight or switching off unnecessary fans and lights could save our planet and its resources significantly. Ideas of these ilks and a lot more were brought to centre-stage by the students at the series of competitions held at Anna Science Centre Planetarium.

An essay competition on the topic ‘Save our planet earth’ was held on Tuesday. Over 35 class XI students from 15 schools in Tiruchi, Perambalur, Lalgudi and Mannachanallur wrote down ways to make the earth greener.

The competition held in connection with National Science Day, which falls on February 28 that commemorates the Nobel prize-winning discovery of Raman’s Effect by Sir C. V. Raman. Celebrations on the day sought to bring to the attention of students the environmental issues that call for immediate concern.

A host of competitions on the topic including painting (for primary classes), elocution (for class IX) and quiz (for classes IX and X) are being conducted by the centre for over a month.

The participants would be judged, by the technical staff of the centre and professors from colleges across the city, based on their innovative ideas and eco-friendly suggestions. Winners would be awarded the prizes on National Science Day.

This is the eighth edition of National Science Day celebrated at the centre. The initiative is to inculcate scientific temper and accelerate the development pace of the country by spreading the message through students.
