All-party meeting to discuss problems in Pasteur Institute

D. Radhakrishnan

The institution has been going through difficult times for the last few months

Udhagamandalam: In a bid to prevent the Pasteur Institute of India (PII) at Coonoor, near here, from being converted into a testing facility an all-party meeting will be held at Coonoor on Wednesday.

Though the PII, which was one of the leading institutions producing anti-rabies and DPT group of vaccines celebrated its centenary last year, all has not been well for sometime now with the institution. With the differences between the employees and t he Director of the PII N. Elangeswaran snowballing into a major confrontation, the institution has been going through difficult times for the past few months.

The state of affairs is reflected in the growing number of flags of various unions fluttering around the bronze statue of Louis Pasteur, the renowned French Scientist, on the threshold of the institution.

Recently the Drugs Controller General (India) and Central License Approving Authority M. Venkateswarlu had observed in a communication to the Director of the PII that an inspection of the premises of PII had revealed that the manufacturing plant, the process of manufacture and the means for standardisation and testing adopted for the substances were not in compliance with the conditions of license.

While the employees allege that efforts were not being made by the management to upgrade the production to World Health Organisation (WHO) standards, the management has reportedly recommended to the Government to convert the PII into a hospital and testing facility stating that it would be difficult for it to meet the requirements of the WHO.
