Karunanidhi refutes CPI (M)’s criticism

Special Correspondent

“Pattas being distributed to the landless poor once in three months”

M. Karunanidhi

CHENNAI: It ill behoves a party of “true camaraderie” to continuously criticise a functioning, progressive government, dubbing it a non-performer, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said here on Tuesday.

He was responding to Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary N. Varadarajan’s observations on the schemes for distribution of free land and house site pattas.

He said the pattas were being distributed to the landless poor once in three months.

The government had fulfilled its promise to to issue three lakh such pattas before the end of the current (financial) year. It was still implementing the scheme.

It had relaxed the minimum number of years one must have resided in a house on government land to be eligible for pattas from ten years to five years, and removed the income limit.

This point had been included in the Governor’s address to the Assembly.

Disagreeing with Mr. Varadarajan’s claim that implementation of the scheme for distribution of wasteland to the landless poor followed a series of agitations by the CPI (M), the Chief Minister said after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government assumed charge in May 2006, the budget presented in the Assembly two months later mentioned the scheme. The programme was launched in September 2006 and its sixth phase commenced in December 2007.

He had participated in the launch of six phases and given away free land.
