HYDERABAD: Six memoranda of understanding, including one between the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the Maryland-India Business Round Table (MIBRT), and four letters of intent, involving the University of Hyderabad and several German firms, were initialled at the three-day BioAsia-2008 here. The MoU between MIBRT and the Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA) seeks business development and joint ventures between companies in India and Maryland that has a large cluster of biotech and agri-based units. It also provides for collaboration in R and D and exchange of information between two groups, B.S. Bajaj, secretary-general, FABA, told The Hindu. He said MoUs between Vega Medicare and Europea Biotechnology Federation and Senova Gmbh, Munich (Germany) envisaged development of multi-rapid diagnostic tests. Consequent to the discussions during Bio-Asia, Iran, Pakistan and Maryland had invited Indian delegations to visit them for interactive meetings in June and August this year. Dr. Bajaj has been invited to lead the delegation to Maryland. He said Villoo Patell, CMD, Avesthagen Ltd (India) had promised an investment of Rs. 500 crore in the SP Biotech Park here after being allotted 8.75 acres. Another project of interest coming up here was the R & D centre at the Biotech Park being set up by Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson of Bangalore-based Biocon. She had already agreed to put up a manufacturing unit in Visakhapatnam, Dr. Bajaj recalled. He said BioAsia-2008, ‘the best-ever to be organised here’, had several firsts to its credit in terms of quality of speeches by eminent persons, including two Nobel laureates and the inauguration by the Vice-President Mohd. Hameed Ansari, visit to Genome Valley and innovation awards of Rs.1 lakh each to two persons.
