Union Minister urges BSNL to brace up for future challenges

Special Correspondent

“Decision on offering IPOs only after consulting labour”

A. Raja

CHENNAI: Union Communications and Information Technology Minister A. Raja on Monday said that in a competitive environment, BSNL should prepare itself to meet future challenges. There was a need for internal debate on the changes required for the purpose.

Addressing the second State conference of the Telecom Employees Progressive Union (TEPU) here, he complimented BSNL’s services for the common man, particularly in rural areas.

There was a need for a healthy competition among companies and a level-playing field. With a view to ensuring greater transparency and to making available equipment for BSNL quicker, it was decided last month that the tender process would be decentralised. A decision on offering IPOs would be taken only after consulting labour, he said.

He deprecated the tendency of some trade unions to launch agitation even before the government announced its decision on an issue. The Minister referred to the growth of the postal network over the years. However, the Postal Department was incurring losses. The department had landed property at several places in the country worth several crores. A Postal Development Corporation was being planned to ensure proper utilisation of the lands for fetching revenue to the department so that additional services could be provided by the department.

A bill to regulate courier services would be introduced in the coming session of Parliament.

Inaugurating the conference, M. Shanmugam, general secretary, LPF, said the union stressed job security, filling of vacancies and timely promotions. It was the duty of employees also to contribute their part for the efficient functioning of the public sector company.

C. Kuppusamy, MP, S. Gurusamy, MLA, V. Subburaman, All India general secretary, TEPU, spoke.
