Jayalalithaa clarifies on barren lands

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said that she had never claimed that a total of 50 lakh acres of barren lands were available with the Tamil Nadu government.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had misunderstood her announcement, Ms. Jayalalithaa said.

In a statement here, she said her government, in its 2001-02 budget, had announced that it would reclaim a total of 50 lakh acres of barren lands and convert them into fertile lands.

“It was not our claim that all the 50 lakh acres were with the government. I had announced that barren lands available with poor patta-holders would be developed with the help of big industrial houses on contract basis,” she said.
