ANGRY PROTEST: Agitators blocking traffic on National Highway 49 near Ramanathapuram on Tuesday. RAMANATHAPURAM: Tension prevailed at Chathirakudi, Kamudhi and Minjur of Ramanathapuram district on Tuesday as cadres of the Puthiya Thamizhagam and students staged demonstrations and road roko, in protest against the alleged removal of tiles from the memorial of dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran at Paramakudi. Nearly 700 students of the Government Sethupathy Arts and Science College, “supported” by outsiders, blocked traffic on the busy National Highway 49. The striking force of the Armed Reserve at Ramanathapuram, pressed into service for regulating traffic, dispersed the crowd. Six persons, including Tamil Nadu Devendrar Peravai general secretary S.S. Balakrishnan, who joined the protest, were taken into custody. The students, who were forced inside the college campus, threw stones, bricks and other objects at the police. They refused to come out until those secured for blocking road were released. Revenue Divisional Officer M.N. Poonkodi held negotiations with the agitators. The protest was withdrawn after those arrested were released. The college was also closed for the day. Vehicular movement on NH 49 came to a standstill following the road blockade at Chathirakudi on Monday night. Similar protests were held at Minjur and Kamudhi. The police told The Hindu that the situation was under control. Pickets had been strengthened at several places. A close watch would be maintained. Cases would be filed against those who disrupted traffic. Puthiya Thamizhagam president K. Krishnasamy, who arrived at Paramakudi on Monday, said the removal of tiles was the handiwork of a group of people to induce hatred among people for political gains. He demanded the arrest of those involved in the incident.
