Rice quota: Chandy blames government

New Delhi: The reduction in rice quota for Kerala was due to the “laxity” of the LDF government in the State, leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said here on Tuesday.

“It was because the State government failed to collect the allotment of rice quota last year that Kerala’s share has been reduced this time,” the Congress leader told mediapersons after his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue.

Mr. Chandy, who also called on Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on the same issue, said “measures have now been taken to import rice to cater to the deficiency”.

He met Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, Law Minister H.R. Bharadwaj and Petroleum Minister Murali Deora during the day.

On being asked if his meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi today had anything to do with a party organisational reshuffle in the State, Mr. Chandy said: “No such things were discussed.”

Mr. Chandy sought to disagree with CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat’s suggestions to the Kerala unit of the Congress to stage protests in Delhi on the issue of price rise.

Mr. Karat had yesterday said the UDF and the Congress should organise agitations against the Centre on the issue of price rise instead of blaming the LDF government in Kerala for the same.

Mr. Chandy said the protests by the Congress in Kerala were aimed at exposing the State government’s “failure to supply essentials to the public”. — PTI
