Five members walk out of Syndicate meeting
Special Correspondent
They protest decision to fill vacancies as per quota guidelines Vice-Chancellor flayed for changing panels without Syndicate nod
CHENNAI: The meeting of Madras University’s Syndicate on Monday witnessed a walkout after a dispute over the university’s recruitment methods.
Appointment orders will be issued for 44 new teaching staff within a few weeks. Over 120 positions are still vacant.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran said that of the 17 members present, five walked out protesting his decision to fill vacancies as per the reservation guidelines. Some members pointed out that the Supreme Court had ruled that where there was only a single vacancy, there was no need to adopt a roster system. However, the Vice-Chancellor said that only two departments—statistics and theoretical physics—had single vacancies.
Members had also criticised the Vice-Chancellor for changing the panel of experts and the selection committees without the approval of the Syndicate. Dr. Ramachandran replied that a Syndicate meeting in December 2007 had authorised him to make the changes.
To the charge that the government order on reservation for the minorities and women was not being followed, Dr. Ramachandran said the order only involved vacancies that arose after September 2007. Government orders could not be implemented until they were adopted by the Syndicate. “Hardly any appointment have been made in three years, and students are suffering…Those with vested interests and hidden agendas should not block recruitment,” he said.
