Film fiesta for the young

Parul Sharma

NEW DELHI: Offering a glimpse into the life, culture and society of Europe, the Department of Slavonic and Finno-Ugrian Studies at Delhi University has organised a festival of films, “Little Europe 2008”, on the North Campus.

The theme of the festival is “Today’s Youth”. It opened on Tuesday and will continue till February 22.

Films from Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina will be screened at the Academic Research Centre opposite Khalsa College.

The event is being supported by the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

Varied genre

The films with varied genre like romance, psychological thriller and drama will offer viewers a mix of entertainment as well as some out-of-the-box cinema.

While the Serbian film “Kad porastem bicu kengur” (When I grow up, I’m gonna be a kangaroo) captures the lost generation of post-communist and post-War Serbia, Bulgarian film “Buntat na L” (L.’S Revolt) deals with the torture, cynicism and physical violence that turn a talented young man into a passive and cold-blooded observer.

Of youth and teens

Slovak film “Fontana Pre Zuzanu” (The Fountain for Suzanne) is the story about the life and troubles of teenagers and how they take the first major decisions of their lives.

A film on two young adults who come into contact with each other, thanks to a lost cell phone, “Peter FM” from Russia shows how their lives get entangled and affect them and their choices.

English subtitles

One film will be screened every day and all the movies will have English subtitles. The screening will be followed by a discussion.
