“Fix teacher–pupil ratio at 1:30 ”
Staff Reporter
PUDUKOTTAI: The Pudukottai district wing of the ‘Tamizhnadu Thodakka Palli Asiriyar Mandram’ has urged the State Government to fix the teacher-pupil ratio at 1:30 to improve the standards of teaching learning practices and for achieving higher academic standards.
A resolution, adopted at its district executive meeting held here recently, said that in addition to re-fixing the ratio in the larger interest of the student community, the State Government should also fill up the post of secondary grade teachers lying vacant for several years.
The meeting, through a resolution, wanted the filling up of vacant posts of ministerial staff at the offices of the Assistant Elementary Educational Officer (AEEO) in the district.
It also wanted construction of buildings for the office of AEEOs which were currently functioning in private buildings in most blocks in the district.
The District president of the Association, N. Shanmuganathan, who presided over the meeting, said that the full term of training period, which the teachers were undergoing at the Block Resource Centres, should be considered as working period. Presently, only a part of the period was being converted into working days, he said. Although a promise in this regard was made earlier, it was yet to be kept.
The Association has currently taken up a signature campaign urging the State Government to fill up the vacant posts from its members all over the State. A memorandum, with signature affixed by one lakh teachers, would be submitted to the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi shortly.
The District treasurer S. Chellapandi was among those who spoke.
