Tuticorin: Collector R. Palaniyandi said that the last date for applying for scholarships instituted by the Ministry of Minority Affairs for meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections in the district, has been rescheduled to February 15. The scholarship has been introduced under ‘post matric scholarship scheme’ formulated as part of the ‘Prime Minister’s new 15-point programme’ for the welfare of minorities, to provide them with better opportunities for higher education, increase the rate of attainment in higher education and enhance employability. The bursary was awarded to students who have secured not less than 50 per cent marks or equivalent grade in previous final examination. The annual of income of parents from all sources should not exceed Rs.2 lakh. The Collector said that rates of scholarship would vary from course to course and in certain categories from hosteller to day scholar. The scholarship, which covers admission and tuition fees, for Classes XI and XII was fixed at Rs.7,000 per annum. Similarly, scholarship for students studying technical and vocational courses of XI and XII levels was fixed at Rs.10,000 per annum. The undergraduate and post graduate students were entitled for a scholarship of Rs.3,000 per annum. For students who were pursuing M Phil and Ph D courses as a day scholar would get Rs.330 per month. If the student was a hosteller, he was eligible to obtain Rs.510 per month. ConditionsHe said that the scholarship would not be given to more than two students from a single family. Income certificate should be produced on self-certification basis by way of an affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper for self-employed parents and from employers for employed parents.
