ANNOUNCING A DECISION: Gulbarga University Vice-Chancellor B.G. Mulimani (right) speaking at the Academic Council meeting of the university on Wednesday. GULBARGA: Chairman of the University Grants Commission Sukhdev Thorat will be conferred the honorary doctorate along with five other personalities by Gulbarga University during its 26th annual convocation on February 18. Presiding over the Academic Council meeting of the university, Vice-Chancellor B.G. Mulimani announced the decision of the university to confer the honorary doctorates on Dr. Thorat; Sajjada Nasheen of the famed dargah of the sufi saint Khwaja Banda Nawaz Syed Shah Khusroo Hussaini; former chairperson of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Geeta Nagabushan; industrialist and philanthropist Galangalappa Patil; and educationist Chennabasappa Halahalli. The honorary doctorate would also be conferred on Vasant Kushtagi, educationist. His name was included in the list at the last minute by the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university. Dr. Mulimani said Dr. Thorat had been selected for his contribution in the field of education. Dr. Syed Shah Khusroo Hussaini, who took over as Sajjada Nasheen of the Khwaja Banda Nawaz Dargah, is a well known educationist and heads the Khaja Education Society, which is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. It runs a chain of educational institutions, including professional colleges in the region. Dr. Hussaini is also an agriculturist, who was honoured as “best agriculturist” last year by the State Government. Ms. Geeta Nagabushan is a prolific writer. She has written more than 30 novels in Kannada and is the winner of the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for her book “Baduku.” Incidentally, Ms. Geeta Nagabushan is the first women writer from Karnataka to receive the prestigious award. A few of her novels have been made into films. She is also the recipient of the “Nadoja” Award. Mr. Galangalappa Patil, popular as S.B. Patil, is a well-known philanthropist, who runs a chain of industries both in Karnataka and outside. He has been selected to receive the honorary doctorate for his contribution in the field of industry. Mr. Chennabasappa Halahalli, hailing from Bidar, has been chosen for his contribution in the field of education. Mr. Halahalli was instrumental in forming the Karnataka Rashtriya Education Society, which runs a number of educational institutions in Bidar district.
