Gulbarga
It is to facilitate celebration of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary on April 14 GULBARGA: The Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) on Wednesday demanded that the government extend the calendar year for all schools up to April 14 to facilitate Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary celebrations. DSS State convener D.G. Sagar, organising convener Malleshi Sajjan and district convenor Suresh Hadimani told presspersons that this would help school students know more about the contribution of Dr. Ambedkar to the country. Pressing for a change in the calendar year of schools, the DSS would stage dharnas throughout the State at all district headquarters on February 18. Mr. Sagar said that the State Government should translate all the 13 volumes of the works of Dr. Ambedkar into Kannada from English since the old prints had been sold out. Similarly, the government should also take up translation of four more volumes of Dr. Ambedkar’s works from English to Kannada. He said that the budgetary allocation for welfare programmes for Scheduled Caste and Tribes should be commensurate with the present SC/ST population. To a question, Mr. Sagar said that the State committee of the DSS had been authorised to take a decision on extending support to political parties in the ensuing polls to the State Assembly. The committee would meet after the election dates were announced and take a decision. No decision had been taken on whether to field candidates on behalf of the DSS, he added.
