A new initiative by JNU

To promote different activities and collaboration within its six science schools and centres, Jawaharlal Nehru University in the Capital will for the first time organise a two-day inter-school “Science Festival” this month-end.

A within-the-campus activity, the event is aimed at encouraging collaborations and joint research projects among the resource persons within the JNU science fraternity.

It would soon be made an annual feature, said Rector-I Rajendra Prasad.

The participating schools will be the School of Computer and Systems Sciences, School of Environmental Sciences, School of Information Technology; School of Life Sciences, School of Physical Sciences, School of Biotechnology and Special Centre for Molecular Medicines.

Birla Institute of Management Technology in Greater Noida (BIMTECH) has set its sights on making the institution a deemed university within the next three years.

“We have already submitted a proposal to the All-India Council for Technical Education for accreditation of our programmes, which is important prior to making our institute a deemed university. We want to bring it on the global horizon in the ne xt four-five years,” said BIMTECH director H. Chaturvedi, who was in Delhi this week ahead of the “Indian Marketing Summit” to be organised by his institution.

“The members of the National Board of Accreditation are likely to visit BIMTECH before June. Experts from the industry and the academicians will inspect our facilities and procedures,” he added.

Dr. Chaturvedi also informed that after obtaining national accreditation, BIMTECH will apply for international accreditation as well.

The institute, which currently offers four MBA programmes and Ph.D. courses in collaboration with the University of Mysore, is currently focusing on “trying to consolidate” its three sectoral MBAs in International Business, Insurance and Retailing.

“We do not want to increase the number of courses just for the heck of it. We want to consolidate our specialised MBA programmes. We had initiated one-year programmes in Insurance and Retailing that were converted into two-year MBA courses in 2007,” he added.

The graduating batch of MBA (International Business) at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) in Delhi and Kolkata got a number of lucrative national and international offers at “Placements 2008” this past week, which witnessed a record high annual domestic salary and international salary of Rs. 25 lakh and 110,000 dollars respectively.

The comparative data for the past three years showed a significant increase in the salary packages of the students.

The average this year shot up to Rs.10.1 lakh compared to Rs.9.5 lakh in 2007 and Rs.8.1 lakh in 2006.

The placement process saw many students preferring domestic profiles. The investment banking and financial services were the major recruiters and consulting, media and global environment turned out to be new emerging sectors.

Deakin University of Australia has announced an initiative to organise “The Cariappa Lecture and Oration Series” to honour Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa.

After his retirement from the Indian Army in 1953, General Cariappa served as India’s High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand till 1956.

“The purpose of the lecture series is not only to honour a distinguished Indian public personality but also to provide a means of highlighting Australia’s relations with India. This initiative will attract the interest of decision makers, scholars and the general public in both the countries,” said Joan Beaumont, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University.
