BHUBANESWAR: Hundreds of employees of Orissa Textile Mills on Wednesday hit upon a novel idea to highlight sad state of the affairs of Orissa Textile Mill (OTM), the first industrial unit of the State. They performed symbolic last rites of employees who had either died or committed suicide after closure of the mill on Mahatma Gandhi Marg. Singing Ram Dhoon, the protestors carried effigies of 16 departed employees while the really which was organised by OTM Banchao Sangathan (OBS), Orissa Bekari Biordhi Abhijan (OBBA) and Birata Janakalyan Samiti (BJS), looked like last procession. They demanded that the State Government reorganize the OTM and establish Integrated Textile Park, which would create direct and indirect employment of 20,000 people. “If the state government does not show any resolve, the employees will commit suicide like farmers in western Orissa. We want the state government should submit a concrete proposal with Orissa High Court in next date,” Chitta Patnaik, General Secretary of OBBA, said. The revival of premier Orissa Textile Mill (OTM) at Choudwar, about 10 kms from Cuttack looked bleak, as the state government reportedly refused to revive the unit and showed interest for its sale. “We will not allow any private company to take over the OTM. We will not yield an inch of land to outsiders. If the state government persists with its sale proposal, there is every chance of violence in Chowdwar,” Deepak Barik, Convenor of BJS, said.
