CPI reiterates demand for coordination panel

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Wednesday reiterated its demand for setting up a coordination committee comprising the Congress and its alliance partners.

Secretary of the CPI unit N. Kalainathan told reporters here that though Congress Working Committee member Arun Kumar had said the need for forming a coordination committee arose only if there were differences among the alliance partners, the panel must be set up now as there had been “conflicts within the Ministry and the administration was facing difficulties in implementing development and welfare schemes with financial crisis looming large.”

Close on the heels of the outcome of the Assembly elections in 2006, the CPI had told the Congress observers, who visited Puducherry then that a coordination committee comprising the Congress, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Pattali Makkal Katchi and the CPI should be formed, he recalled.

Referring to Mr. Kumar’s remark that the government’s performance in implementation of the election manifesto was “wonderful,” Mr. Kalainathan said assurances given in the Assembly such as distribution of free TV sets, assistance for the unemployed youth and increasing MLA constituency development fund to Rs.1.25 crore had not been fulfilled.
