Ketamine seized

CHENNAI: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 27 kg of ketamine hydrochloride from a Kuala Lumpur-bound passenger at the Anna international terminal of the Chennai airport on Tuesday.
The seized drug was valued at Rs 2.7 crore in the international market.
A DRI release said acting on a tip-off, the passenger was intercepted. On examination, his checked-in baggage was found to contain 27 packets, which were claimed to be maida.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the passenger carried the drug, which was given to him by a Chennai-based person, for a monetary consideration.
The passenger was arrested.
In the last two years, DRI seized more than 287 kg of ketamine hydrochloride, valued at Rs.28 crore in the international market, and arrested 10 persons.
Increase in cases
There has been a spurt in the number of cases of smuggling of ketamine hydrochloride to South-East Asian countries in the last couple of months.
