HYDERABAD: Heavy rain that lashed the State for the fifth day on Wednesday claimed three lives in Prakasam district apart from damaging vast stretches of crops in at least six districts.

In Visakhapatnam district, five persons were killed when their boat capsized.

The rain caused extensive damage to Bengalgram, paddy, tobacco, red gram, chillies, groundnut.

The brunt of the rain fury was faced by farmers of Prakasam district where crop in 1.03 lakh hectares was damaged.

Meanwhile, the upper air trough moved from Coastal Andhra to Telangana and Rayalaseema, extending from Marathwada region of Maharashtra to South Tamil Nadu. Coastal Andhra, that faced the brunt for the past four days, was spared.

Khammam, Coonavaram and Narayankhed received 7 cm of rain each.

The State is likely to emerge from spell of heavy rain from Thursday and weathermen have forecast that there would be only light to moderate rains..

Inclement weather forced Telugu Desam President N. Chandrababu Naidu to scrap his proposed visit to the flood-hit areas in Prakasam district by helicopter though Revenue Minister D. Prasada Rao, accompanied by two Ministers N. Raghuveera Reddy and M. Venkata Ramana Rao and Disaster Management Commissioner Preeti Sudan managed to fly in a different chopper to Ongole.
