‘Highhanded behaviour’ against MLC, MPTCs

Hindu sentiments hurt, says TDP

HYDERABAD: A senior government official will inquire into charges of highhanded behaviour by police officials against an MLC and MPTC members in Eluru last week during a protest demonstration.

This was announced by Home Minister K. Jana Reddy in the Council amid protests by Telugu Desam Party members against the action of the police against Y. Babu Rajendra Prasad, MLC, and 35 MPTC members, when they tried to submit a memorandum of demands to the West Godavari Collector.

Report on incident

Mr. Jana Reddy initially said the Collector would look into the charges but later said he would depute a senior official to submit a report on the incident.

Raising the issue under Rule 311, TDP floor leader Dadi Veerabhadra Rao decried the behaviour of the Eluru police. He said that Mr. Rajendra Prasad and other MPTC members proceeded to the Collector’s bungalow but were prevented by the police despite having permission. After they finally met the Collector, police whisked them away to the station on the ground that they had assaulted a constable. He said Hindu sentiments were ‘hurt’ when the women MPTC members were forced to remove their mangalasutras, when they were sent to jail.

Abusive language

The Home Minister said that the delegation tried to forcibly enter the Collector’s bungalow. When the police resisted their bid, Mr. Rajendra Prasad used abusive language against the police and gate-crashed into the bungalow.
