Fisherman’s wife immolates self

VILLUPURAM: S. Geetha (35)wife of a fisherman, immolated herself at her residence in Kaippanikuppam near Marakkanam on Tuesday.

The police said Sathyan, her husband, had allegedly registered a false complaint against certain persons stating that they had threatened him. he panchayat, after a public enquiry, found the allegations baseless.

Besides levying a fine of Rs.20,000, it ordered the excommunication of Sathyan and his family. Hurt by indictment of the local panchayat and the taunts of villagers, Geetha immolated herself. The police have registered a case against four persons. — Special Correspondent
