Staging Telugu humour

HYDERABAD: Andhra Saraswatha Parishad and Department of Culture are jointly organising a unique programme of adapting humorous episodes in various genres of modern Telugu literature to the stage.

Under the theme ‘Adhunika Telugu Sahityamlo Hasyam’ (Humour in Modern Telugu Literature), episodes from popular literary works – story, novel, drama, essays- were selected and adapted to stage presentation by prominent personalities from theatre, said Parishad chairman and Jnanpeeth awardee C. Narayana Reddy and director culture, R. Kavitha Prasad at a media conference here on Wednesday. These selected plays would be presented at Ravindra Bharati on February15 and 16. The episodes to be presented were taken from K.Narayanarao’s drama ‘Vara Vikrayam’, M. Narasimha Rao’s story ‘The Perfect Life’, Chilakamarthi’s ‘Ganapathi’ novel and more.

Also slated to be staged are Gurajada’s ‘Kanyasulkam’, ‘Gyara Kaddu- Bara Kotwal’ of Suravaram Prataba Reddi, ‘Sakshi’ an article written by Panuganti.

Dr. Narayana Reddi said that Telugu literature has several works known for their intricate humour and thus this effort to present them to the present generation.

A book comprising above stage presentations has also been brought out and it would be released on the inaugural day by Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, he said.
