DEHRA DUN: Senior Congress leader in charge of Uttarakhand affairs R. K. Dhawan, on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of dividing society on communal lines since the Jan Sangh days. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Dhawan said the Congress alone stood for equality and should be voted for in the coming Pauri Lok Sabha by-elections. “The Congress nominee, Satpal Maharaj, is a true friend of the masses and not someone who had betrayed them like the BJP nominee, T.P.S. Rawat,” he said. The result of a by-election, however, was not indicative of any trend for future elections, he added. Accusing the BJP Government in Uttarakhand of having stopped all development activity initiated by the Congress regime, Mr. Dhawan asked the BJP leaders to rise above party politics and further strengthen the foundation laid by the Narain Dutt Tiwari Government. Mr. Dhawan refuted the BJP’s allegation that the Congress-led government at the Centre was adopting a step-motherly attitude towards Uttarakhand. The State had been given whatever aid it sought and the blame game by the BJP leaders was unfortunate, he said. Answering a query, Mr. Dhawan said there was total unity in the State unit .
