Samba harvest nearing completion in Nagapattinam

Special Correspondent

Entire process expected to be over by the end of this month

NAGAPATTINAM: Harvest of samba and thaladi paddy crops in the Cauvery delta region of Nagapattinam district is nearing completion and 90 per cent of the harvest was over in the district.

P.R. Vaithiyanathan, Joint Director of Agriculture, Nagapattinam, told The Hindu on Wednesday that samba paddy was raised in 1.07 lakh hectares and thaladi in 25,000 hectares in the district this year.

The entire harvest is expected to be completed by end of this month, he said.

He said that the average yield of paddy was between three to three and half tonnes per hectare and pointed out that it was less than the anticipated yield of six tonnes per hectare by the Agriculture Department. He added that the poor yield was due to the crop damage caused by the two spells of heavy northeast monsoon rains in December last year.

Procurement touches 1.25 lakh tonnes

Procurement of samba paddy by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation in Nagapattinam district has touched 1.25 lakh tonnes on Tuesday.

The average daily arrival of paddy is about 6,500 tonnes per hectare.

P. Moorthy, Senior Regional Manager of TNCSC, Nagapattinam, told The Hindu on Tuesday that the corporation was purchasing paddy directly from the farmers through its 221 Direct Purchase Centres functioning in various parts of the district.

The TNCSC is now buying paddy with moisture content up to 20 per cent subject to a grade cut in the price.

He pointed out that the TNCSC was now offering Rs.825 per quintal for Grade A paddy variety and Rs.795 for common variety with moisture content up to 17 per cent as per the decentralised procurement system of the Centre. The price includes an incentive of Rs.100 per quintal, he said.
