Custodial death: High Court orders compensation
Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday awarded a compensation of Rs.5 lakh to the legal heirs of a person who died in police custody in 1999.
Justice A.K. Basheer ordered the State government to pay the compensation in two months with nine per cent interest. The order came on a writ petition filed by Sreedevi Mohanan and her child seeking a CBI inquiry into the death of her husband Mohanan who was taken into custody by the Keezhvaipur police in Pathanamthitta district. The court also ordered a CBI probe into the custodial death and directed the CBI to take over the investigation in six months. The issue was raised in the Assembly and the then Chief Minister had assured that it would be probed. The petitioner said the investigation by the police was not proper.
