‘Jallikattu’ held as per norms at Tirunallur
Staff Reporter
Traditional: Youths trying to tame a bull at Tirunallur village near Iluppur in Pudukottai district.
PUDUKOTTAI: About 30 persons suffered minor injuries in the ‘jallikattu’ rituals held as part of the annual festival of Sri Muthumariamman Temple in Tirunallur village near Iluppur in the district on Tuesday.
Of them, 14 persons were referred to the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi, where their condition was improving.
Adequate arrangements
As the rituals forms a major annual event in the district, the district administration made adequate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the same in accordance with the directive by Supreme Court.
A large number of youths, after an initial medical fitness test, were allowed to tame the bulls which were brought in lorries and other heavy vehicles from parts of Pudukottai, Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Sivagangai districts. The ritual was video-graphed, as a precautionary measure.
Collector D. Uthirakkumaran visited the village and oversaw the arrangements.
Limited permission
In a press release issued later, he said that permission for organising the ritual would be granted only up to February. No ‘jallikattu’ would be held beyond this month.
