Pallava inscription identified

Special Correspondent

Unique: A sculpture of Chandikeswara of Pallava period found in Ponvilaindhanpatti near Maraneri.

THANJAVUR: A rare inscription in Tamil consonants (Otru) has been identified by Dr. Kudavayil Balasubramanian, epigraphist at the doorway stone of the garbagraha of Pasupatheeswara Temple at Maraneri village of Thanjavur district.

Henceforth, all the inscriptions in Tamil were inscribed with the letters for consonants (otru) without bearing a dot on it as written in the present day. The slab bearing the inscription is found fixed in an inverse position. The inscriptions reveal the message that 30 Kalanju of gold was offered as an endowment for lighting the lamps in the temple during the reign of Nirupatunga Pallava in his 24th year of rule (893 A.D.).

Many Tamil scholars used to say that the practice of putting dots on the consonants (Otru) was introduced by Father Besky (Veerama Munivar). This is a wrong notion. This inscription reveals that this practice was in use even during the Pallava period.

Instead of putting a dot on the letters of the consonants, a hook like symbol was inscribed and it looked like a chunk shape in appearance. All the consonants bear this symbol.

As regards the full stop symbol, a dot is inscribed in the inscriptions of Rajaraja Chola at Thanjavur Big temple. Dr. Kudavayil Balasubramanian has also identified a rare sculpture of Chandikeswara and some other sculptures at Ponvilaindhanpatti near Maraneri. There is a Durga sculpture also at Mananeri belonging to Pallava period. Villagers are preserving these sculptures in the respective temples.
