Recognition: S. Rajavelu, Senior Epigraphist, ASI, Chennai, being conferred the Best Epigraphist Award in Tiruchi on Tuesday.
TIRUCHI: Epigraphists do a thankless job. Given the declining interest on the study of inscriptions, epigraphists are few in number and their work largely go unnoticed, except among scholars and researchers in the field.
Realising the need for recognising their services in the cause of tracing history and culture by poring over inscriptions, often in remote places, the City-based Subramanian-Palaniyandi Trust has instituted an annual award to recognise eminent epigraphists. The second annual award has been conferred this year on S. Rajavelu, Senior Epigraphist, Archaeological Society of India (ASI), Chennai.
The award was presented to Dr. Rajavelu by P. Subash Chandra Bose, Head, Department of Tamil, Bishop Heber College, at a function held at the college here on Tuesday. M. Marcus Diepen Boominathan, Principal, Bishop Heber College, R. Kalaikkovan, Director, Dr. M. Rajamanickkanar Centre for Historical Research, and Dr. S. Palaniyandi, who has instituted the award, were present.
Dr. Rajavelualso delivered the K. R. Srinivasan Memorial Endowment lecture.
