TIRUCHI: Provision of maternity leave for women construction workers, fixation of equal wages for men and women workers and governmental take over of all stone quarries were some of the prominent demands put forward at a special conference of women construction workers held in Tiruchi on Tuesday.

The conference was organised by the Tamil Nadu All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Construction Workers Union. The conference adopted a resolution demanding that women construction workers be granted maternity leave of six months with a monthly assistance of Rs.3,000 during the leave period.

Citing discrepancies in the wages paid to men and women construction workers, the conference demanded that women workers be paid on par with men. The State Government should fix the daily wage for women construction workers at Rs.150 in rural areas and Rs.200 in urban areas, another resolution said. The government should ensure that all crèches were operated between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. In places where there was no crèche run by the Welfare Board, the government should ensure that the facility was created with the help of NGOs.

Reservation

Three seats out of the nine meant for workers representatives in the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board should be reserved for women. The existing two vacancies should be filled with women representatives and one of them should be given for AITUC.

The conference also demanded the passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill and fixation of the retirement age for women construction workers at 55.

The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Saraswathi. K. Puspha, presided over the conference, which was addressed by P. Padmavathi, MLA and State general secretary, National Federation of Indian Women, R. Rajeswari, Member, TN Domestic Workers Welfare Board, M. Selvaraj, district secretary, Communist Party of India, K. Ravi, general secretary, TN AITUC Construction Workers Union, Waheeda Nijam and others.
