Play the role of watchdog, Karat tells media

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat on Wednesday cautioned against the danger of the media not being able to play the role of a watchdog as it was increasingly driven by organisational and commercial needs.

Speaking at the presentation of the Nawab Rajendran Award instituted by Kairali TV for excellence in investigative journalism to C.A.M. Kareem, Bureau Chief of the Madhyamam daily in Thiruvananthapuram, Mr. Karat said Rajendran might have been a maverick in many ways and was an anachronism in the corporatised and professionalised media world of today.

“However, there was certain value attached to the maverick style,” Mr. Karat said. “Whatever be the style he adopted in bringing out corruption, he came out with facts, exposing people in high places and produced results,” he added.

He lauded the role of the media in exposing corruption, misuse of power and public position and said that in this age of sponsored reports, great value should be added to the recognition being accorded to journalists who exposed corruption.

He referred to his experience in Utter Pradesh during an election campaign where the media were not present to cover his function. Later, from his partly leaders he learnt that there were special rates for coverage in the local papers. Since the party could not afford the rates quoted, they decided against coverage of the function. Mr. Karat expressed the hope that the system would not take root in Kerala.

Thomas Jacob, editorial director, Malayala Manorama; P.T. Kunjumohammed, filmmaker; K. Suresh Kurup, MP; A. Vijayaraghavan, MP; V.N. Vasavan, MLA; and others spoke.
