Signs MoU with Australian firm

Gypsum accumulated at FACT will be utilised Australian company to provide technology
KOCHI: Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) and Mumbai-based Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rapid Building Systems (RBS), Australia, for supply of technology, licence and critical equipment for manufacturing fibreglass-reinforced gypsum load-bearing wall panels from phosphor gypsum.
The MoU was signed by A. Asokan, Director (Technical) of FACT; H.S. Karangle, Director (Technical) of RCF, and Franc Omahen, Director (Technical) of RBS, in the presence of George Sleeba, Chairman and Managing Director of FACT and U. S. Jha, Chairman and Managing Director, RCF. Other senior officials from FACT, RCF and RBS were present on the occasion.
The MoU paves the way for establishing a new plant for producing gypsum-based building materials at a cost of Rs.80 crore and it is being put up at Ambalamedu. T
he plant is expected to go on stream in May 2009, said a communication from FACT here on Wednesday.
Major venture
Coming as a major venture for the struggling fertilizer company here, the plant will produce 14 lakh sq. m of load-bearing panels and other products like wall plaster and wall putty a year.
The plant will be installed jointly by FACT and RCF. The huge quantity of gypsum accumulated at FACT’s Ambalamedu unit will be utilised for producing the building materials. The Australian company, RBS, which supplies technology for this venture, has expressed high appreciation regarding the superior quality of FACT’s gypsum, said the press release.
Eco-friendly product
According to company sources, the gypsum-based product is a revolution in the building industry replacing steel, cement, concrete, bricks, river sand, timber etc. The new product is eco-friendly and comes at competitive cost.
Rapid walls are manufactured in a moulding process using fibreglass, water-resistant gypsum plaster, adhesives etc.
These panels are currently used in Australia, China and Malaysia, the press release added.
