Spiritual concerns: W.J. Gladstone, Moderator of Church of South India, addressing the ecumenical meet at Maramon on Wednesday. PATHANAMTHITTA: Moderator of the Church of South India W.J. Gladstone has called upon the faithful to keep themselves guarded against forces posing hurdles to their spiritual enlightenment. The CSI Moderator was delivering the keynote address at the ecumenical meet held as part of the 113th Maramon Convention at Maramon, near Kozhencherry, on Wednesday forenoon. He said the entire universe was the creation of God and love and compassion to all living beings would bring God’s blessings. Mar Thoma Metropolitan Joseph Mar Thoma presided over the meet. The heavy rain in the afternoon forced the organisers to shift the afternoon’s meet against social evils from the convention venu to the St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church in Kozhencherry town. The heavy downpour led to a rise in the water level in Pampa, and water entered certain parts of the meting venue. Catholicos Designate of the Malankara Orthodox Church Paulose Mar Milithios delivered the keynote address at the meet against social evils that began at 2 p.m. at the St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church. However, the evening session was held at the riverbed itself at 7 p.m. Delivering the keynote address at the evening session, Abraham Mar Paulose Metropolitan said erosion of values in all walks of life was a major a problem in the globalised world. Man trying to change even spirituality according to his whims and fancies was the sad state of affairs in the modern globalised set up, he said. Citing the popular agitation for land at Nandigram in West Bengal and at Chengara near Pathanamthitta, Mar Paulose said it was alleged that the authorities were turning a blind eye towards people’s fight for justice.
