PT demands probe into attacks on Dalits by special team

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Puthiya Tamilagam has sought an enquiry by a special team into the series of attacks on Dalits and their symbols of reverence in the State.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, party president K. Krishnasamy said such a probe was necessary to initiate action against those responsible for the attacks. He condemned the damage caused to Immanuel Sekaran’s memorial at Paramakudi and said that the incident was the third in the last three years for which no action had been taken. Recently, Dr. Ambedkar’s statue was damaged near Karaikudi, again with no action to identify the miscreants. He suspected a political conspiracy behind the attacks.

The party would conduct a State-level conference to mark the 10th year since its political baptism in 1998 on the Maatuthavani grounds here on February 24. It would focus on the United Progressive Alliance Government and the State Government’s election promises and their failure to deliver. Starting from its promise of reservation in the private sector, the Union Government had adopted a “pro market approach,” he said.

Dr. Krishnasamy wanted the Centre to scrap the 60 per cent mark criterion for SC and ST students for the post-matric scholarships and said that he had met Meira Kumar, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, with this plea. He alleged that the Government hostels in the State were in a poor condition and called for an increase in stipend for SC/ST students from Rs. 500 to Rs.1000. Dr. Krishnasamy blamed the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, for including the mark criterion in the 11th Plan.

The State Government’s claim of providing 3 lakh house pattas was a false one, he alleged.
