Rain claims student’s life

Nagercoil: Heavy rain, which lashed various parts of the district, claimed the life of a school student, when she came in contact with a live wire on Wednesday.

Rains continued to lash the district for the second day causing hardship to farmers, school children and office goers. A community centre at Rajakkamangalamthurai and a temporary bridge at Andithoppu collapsed.

Kalaivani (12) of Kanjaramvilai, was killed when she came in contact with a damaged electric wire, while going to her tuition class.

Harvesting work was also affected in Azaghiyapandipuram, Kadukkarai, Kattuputhur, Kurunthancode, Villukury, Aloor, Vazukkanparai and surrounding areas.

A maximum rainfall of 63.4 mm was recorded at Aralvoimozhi followed by Boothapandi - 56, Myladi - 41, Kottaram – 37.4, Kannimar – 32.5 and Nagercoil – 18.8.

The level in Pechipparai dam stood at 33.25 feet, 50.27 feet in Perunchani and 6.92 feet in Chittar I.
