THENI: Stern action would be initiated against transport operators violating guidelines in transport of animals from one destination to another, according to Deputy Inspector General of Police S.S. Krishnamurthy.
He was addressing a special range level meeting with department officials and lorry truck transport operators in Theni and Dindigul districts here on Tuesday.
Animal transport laws have specified that only six cattle could be transported in a lorry.
Guidelines issued
Specific guidelines have been also issued for transporting animals with minimum discomfort to a particular destination. They must be followed strictly, he added.
In his special address, Superintendent of Police A. Pari said that the public could inform the police about violations, if any, in transporting animals for immediate action.
Transporting chickens in two-wheelers in hanging position and dumping animals beyond capacity in lorries were violations of the law. Such activities would attract criminal action and punishment under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Birds Act. Animals should be given sufficient space for movement.
Beating, kicking, overloading and overcrowding animals during transit and deprival of food and water during transportation also amounted to violation.
He also advised traffic police to intensify surveillance on national and state highways to ensure safe journey of animals, even if they were taken to slaughter houses in other parts of the state or the neighbouring state.
