Electronic scales for ration shops
Staff Reporter
DINDIGUL: All fair price shops in the district would have electronic weighing machines to enable card holders to get PDS goods in correct weight.
Such a measure will eliminate underweighing and other irregularities in essential commodities, according to Collector R. Vasuki.
She was addressing a seminar on Right to Information Act and Consumer Act awareness held at Palani near here on Wednesday.
Electronic weighing machines have been supplied to 66 fair price shops so far. Remaining shops would get this machine within six months, she added.
“People can view the weight of the items measured in the weighing machine through the digital display.
Knowledge on Consumers Act and RTI Act was essential to establish their rights. Consumer organisations must intensify awareness campaign on these things among people in urban as well as in rural areas.
All information sought under RTI Act must be furnished by the officials within 30 days, failing which a fine of Rs.250 would be imposed for every day beyond the deadline.
She also advised consumers not to file unnecessary petitions under the Act as such step would affect the routine work of government officials.
A hand book issued to participants has all information about RTI Act and consumer Act, she added.
