TCS to expand academic interface

Shastry V. Mallady

MADURAI: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will strengthen its academic interface programme with engineering colleges in southern districts to prepare students for information technology work culture.

It also has a corporate policy of collaboration starting from schools as part of its campus-focused initiatives.

TCS vice-president Hema Gopal told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the company had been recruiting students from southern districts and the academic interface it had in colleges was able to give exposure to them.

“We are expanding to tier-II cities where a lot of IT parks are coming up, including Madurai. Last year, our company recruited 250 students from colleges in this region,” she said.

The TCS vice-president was in the city to participate in the inaugural function of a students’ symposium ‘Tecuthsav’08,’ organised by Thiagarajar College of Engineering.

Focus on soft skills

According to Ms. Gopal, colleges should encourage students to focus on development of soft skills and personality, and not just technical knowledge.

She said that the company’s priority in the academic interface project was to give students the ability to work in a global culture, adapt to different work cultures and acquire good communication skills in the campus.

Asked if the TCS had any plans to start a delivery centre in Madurai, she said that it was a corporate decision and she could not comment on that.
