Letters to the Editor
The unrest is nothing but a battle between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray for control over Mumbai in the name of protecting the interests of Maharashtrians. The beneficiary is the Congress. Besides being a family feud, the issue is also socio-economic in nature. Raj Thackeray is not entirely wrong in saying the jobs in Mumbai have been taken over by north Indians. But I don’t agree with his method of instigating violence against them. Senseless migration into cities by unguided job-hunters should he halted. Every State must ensure that the locals get 90 per cent of the jobs available. Baru Rajendra Prasad, Hyderabad The outrage over the violence should not divert our attention away from the real issue, which is the failure of the political class of some northern States to provide good governance. By perpetuating backwardness, States such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have cornered the lion’s share of Central funds. Instead of pretending to be victims of discrimination, the rulers in these States should address the burning issues. True, everyone has the right to live or work anywhere in India. But large-scale migration of people from other States into a city is likely to provoke resentment among the locals. V.N. Mukundarajan, Thiruvananthapuram Md. Shad Jamal, Puducherry
