Assam, Goa qualify

Madurai: Assam held defending champion Goa to a 1-1 draw, while Maharashtra coasted to a 6-1 victory over Kerala in the ‘B’ group quarterfinal league of the 17th youth (under-21) National football championship here on Wednesday.

Both Goa and Assam qualified for the semifinals from this group with 5 points each (one win and 2 draws).

Maharashtra finished with 4 points (one win, one draw and one loss). Kerala finished with only one point (one draw).

Early lead

Assam took the lead in the 18th minute when Sibranarzary found the net. Goa equalised in the 63rd minute when Sanasar Fernandes sent in a fine cross to Gabriel Fernandes, who found the net.

In the other match, it was Kerala, which went into the lead in the eighth minute when Shamil headed in off a fine cross from Jasheer.

The equaliser for Maharashtra came in the 43rd minute when Chetan Kumar headed in off a rebound from Kerala goalkeeper Aboo Fazil.

On resumption Maharashtra scored at will. The second goal came in the 65th minute.

Craig D’ Sonza sent a fine cross from the right, which was headed in by Keegan Peirara but the ball hit the upright Peirara himself volleyed home the rebound.

Two minutes later Chetan Kumar scored off a cross from Ansair Tarique. Others to score are Craig D’ Sonza (78th), Keegan Peirara (79th) and Ansari Sameer (89th).

Referee Arockia Raj of Tamil Nadu had to flourish a red card on Deepu (70th minute) and Anish (two yellow cards, 48th and 85th) of Kerala.

Thursday is a rest day.
