CHENNAI: Blue is the colour of the year with bottle green and brown being very in. At the National Institute of Fashion Technology’s annual cultural festival, “Spectrum,” silver and the seven colours have come together on designer T-shirts to make the fest even more brilliant.

Students Ashwinikumar and Anuj Agarwal, whose T-shirt designs the 635 students are sporting now, said “we chose a very different aerial view of the campus [in Taramani] and printed that at the back and in the front we chose the foil print because that’s also very in now.”

The events, spread over February 13, 14 and 15, are divided into two categories — fashion and non-fashion — and events such as Graffiti Wall, Spray Around, Paper bag and Seam Rippers fall under the first category; while singing, awesome race, cycle rally, dance workshop and Rang Manch come under the latter.

In Seam rippers the students were given a piece of clothing like a T-shirt or a kurta or a top and were asked to make new clothes. “From the T-shirt, we made a halter and a skirt with the sleeves,” explained Prachi Jain, one of the participants.

Just beyond the entrance was Navaneeth Varma’s table with body art, face painting and caricatures.

“I just picked it up for fun. I used to draw stuff on my hands for parties and then this is the first time I am trying on others,” he said.

The theme for the Spray Around event as well as the Spectrum itself is “Realising Dreams” and for the event, students were just given three minutes in which they had to choose a design and spray colours accordingly.

Spectrum is just not all fun and entertainment. The students have put up displays of different kinds of knits, leather and accessories for visitors to see.

Students also have been provided the opportunity to learn three kinds of dance — Hiphop, Tango and Salsa — from a professional dancer.

NIFT Director S. Devadoss said the festival offered an opportunity for outsiders to learn about the various activities of the Institute as well as watch and appreciate the talents of the students.

Uniforms ready

The Institute, he said, had already completed designing the uniforms for the Chennai Corporation staff and would be handing them over in a month’s time.

The departments of Fashion Textile and Designing were involved in the project, he added.
